Ahead of the 78th Independence Day, the Delhi Airport is witnessing long queues of passengers due to the heightened security measures.

As heightened security measures ramp up ahead of the 78th Independence Day celebrations, Delhi Airport is facing unprecedented delays, with passengers enduring lengthy queues and widespread confusion over check-in procedures.

Travelers have taken to social media, sharing photos and videos of the extensive lines at IGI Airport, describing the situation as “pathetic.” Complaints have surfaced about a lack of communication from airlines regarding the delays at Terminal 3.

Edelweiss Mutual Fund MD and CEO Radhika Gupta recounted her own experience of being stuck in a massive security line. She managed to catch her flight thanks to the assistance of airline staff, despite the reported average wait time of a staggering 256 minutes. Gupta shared her frustration on X, stating, “I witnessed this firsthand. A beleaguered airline staffer informed me of the 256-minute wait time. Grateful for @airvistara’s help in making my flight, but this needs urgent attention.”

As the holiday rush intensifies, Delhi Airport’s Terminal 3 is experiencing unprecedented congestion. An X user described the scene as “insane ahead of the holidays,” noting that even the Digiyatra lane is packed for the first time. He praised the Delhi Airport ground staff for providing free water bottles and police security for facilitating faster movement but urged @MoCA_GoI to implement additional arrangements for high-traffic airports.

Another user voiced frustration with the prolonged security checks, stating, “Very pathetic situation these days at @DelhiAirport. @CISFHQ takes too much time to clear security, causing excessive congestion both outside and inside the terminal.”

A third user shared a video of the long queues, emphasizing, “This is not a railway station, bus stand, or public park; this is our world-famous IGI Airport Terminal 3 in New Delhi. With 2-3 hour waits for security, passenger numbers are rising, but resources remain the same.”

Amidst growing concerns, many users are highlighting the critical need for more resources and improvements to handle the increasing passenger volume effectively.

What did Delhi Airport say?

In response to the growing concerns from passengers, Delhi Airport addressed the issue on X, stating, “Dear Passengers, we understand your concerns. Our on-ground officials are doing their utmost to reduce any inconvenience and are working closely with CISF officials to ensure a smooth travel experience.”

The airport explained that the enhanced security measures implemented ahead of Independence Day on August 15 have led to longer security check times. “We regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience during this period,” the statement continued.
