In a landmark development for Indian aviation, Air India has introduced in-flight Wi-Fi services on its domestic flights, marking a significant leap forward in passenger experience. With this move, Air India has become the first Indian airline to offer uninterrupted internet connectivity on domestic routes, setting a new standard for air travel in the country.

The Long Journey to In-Flight Connectivity

For years, international flights have provided Wi-Fi services, allowing passengers to stay connected during their journeys. However, this convenience was noticeably absent over Indian airspace due to regulatory and technological constraints. Historically, even flights equipped with Wi-Fi had to switch off their services when entering Indian airspace, creating an “internet black hole” for passengers.

This changed in December 2018 when the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) introduced the Flight and Maritime Connectivity Rules, 2018. These regulations permitted both Indian and foreign airlines to offer in-flight connectivity (IFC) services within Indian airspace. However, initial restrictions, such as altitude limitations (above 3,000 metres) to avoid interference with terrestrial networks, hindered widespread implementation. In 2024, the rules were amended to remove the altitude limitation, paving the way for seamless in-flight internet access.

Overcoming Technological and Economic Hurdles

Implementing in-flight Wi-Fi is no small feat. Airlines must invest heavily in advanced hardware and infrastructure to ensure reliable internet connectivity at high altitudes and speeds. Two primary technologies enable in-flight Wi-Fi:

  1. Air-to-Ground (ATG) Systems: These systems rely on ground-based cell towers to provide internet connectivity. While cost-effective, they are limited in coverage, particularly over large water bodies. Air India’s deployment uses state-of-the-art technology to ensure reliability.
  2. Satellite-Based Systems: Offering broader coverage, including over oceans, these systems communicate with satellites to deliver internet services. Modern advancements have minimized delays, ensuring faster connectivity speeds for passengers.

Cost was another significant barrier for Indian airlines. With high implementation expenses and doubts about passenger willingness to pay for in-flight internet, many carriers hesitated to adopt the technology. However, the growing demand for connectivity and technological advancements have now made this a viable option.

The Game-Changing Rollout by Air India

In 2025, Air India has rolled out its in-flight Wi-Fi services on select domestic flights, available on Airbus A350, Boeing 787-9, and select Airbus A321neo aircraft. To celebrate this milestone, the airline is offering complimentary high-speed internet access to passengers during an introductory phase.

This service allows travelers to browse the web, stream entertainment, and stay connected with work or loved ones, transforming the flying experience. By offering seamless streaming and uninterrupted browsing, Air India’s initiative is expected to influence other Indian carriers to follow suit, making in-flight connectivity a standard feature in domestic aviation.

Pioneering the Future of Indian Aviation

The launch of in-flight Wi-Fi on Air India’s domestic flights represents a revolution in Indian aviation, aligning it with global standards. It also underscores the airline’s commitment to enhancing passenger convenience and embracing technological advancements. With this step, Indian skies are no longer a connectivity dead zone but a gateway to uninterrupted communication and entertainment.
