Hapur, Uttar Pradesh: A man who went to a police station in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, to report a lost mobile phone was stunned by an unusual request from the officers. Chanchal Kumar was instructed by a police officer to bring one kilogram of ‘jalebis’ before his complaint could be processed. Despite his frustration over the lost cellphone, Kumar felt he had no choice but to comply with the officer’s demand.
The incident took place in Kanaur village, approximately 91 km from the state capital Lucknow, within the jurisdiction of Bahadurgarh police station. On Saturday evening, Chanchal Kumar lost his mobile phone while he was out buying medicines. Despite an extensive search, he was unable to locate the device.
At the police station, after listening to his complainant, the cop asked him to either get Balushahi (a North-Indian sweet) or hot Jalebis for them.
When Mr Kumar sensed that the cop won’t budge, he purchased Jalebis from the shop following which the police officer registered his complaint.
Earlier this month, a sub-inspector in UP’s Kannauj was suspended for demanding “potatoes” as a bribe. It was later revealed that the term “potato” was used as a code for a bribe. Just days later, another police officer in Uttar Pradesh was suspended for demanding a cooler as a bribe. Manish Kumar Prajapati, stationed in the Mau district of eastern Uttar Pradesh, was accused by Om Prakash Sharma, a resident of Katghara Shankar Village, of asking his wife for a cooler and ₹6,000 as a bribe. Sharma also claimed that Prajapati verbally abused his wife during a phone call.
