POAM Makes it Clear that Doug Lloyd is the Only Choice to be Michigan’s Attorney General

LANSING – At a press conference today in the headquarters, the Police Officers Association of Michigan (POAM) laid out what is at stake in November and made it clear that Eaton County Prosecutor Doug Lloyd is the only choice to be Michigan’s Attorney General.

POAM, the largest police officer union in the state, endorsed Lloyd for Attorney General earlier this year and talked about why they are supporting him during the media availability today.

“When we sat down with Doug to interview him for an endorsement, he was the best candidate we’d heard for this position in a long time, maybe forever,” POAM President Jim Tignanelli said.

Lloyd, who has served as a prosecutor for nearly 30 years, knows firsthand the importance of the relationship between police and prosecutors and how their partnership keeps Michiganders safe. Lloyd has protected communities by prosecuting drug traffickers and violent criminals, and he has protected consumers by setting up the state’s first economic crime unit in Eaton County.

“It was important to me as I made the decision to run for Attorney General to know if law enforcement would support me and I am honored to have the endorsement of the thousands of members of the Police Officers Association of Michigan,” Lloyd said. “I have made the commitment that we are going to focus the Attorney General’s office on public safety. When I am Attorney General, I will work with local law enforcement and be a support system for them and local prosecutors.”

While Lloyd is a career prosecutor law enforcement can trust, his opponent, Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit, is a career political activist who refuses to do his job.

Here are some examples:

Let a repeat sex offender with a lengthy criminal history off with barely a slap on the wrist for violating his sex offender registration. Two years later, that same man broke into a woman’s home, sexually assaulted her, and murdered her.

Given a plea deal with lesser charges to a man that hog-tied a woman and suffocated her with a plastic bag while threatening to sexually assault her. The criminal allegedly went on to carjack and shoot a mom in front of her child in Oakland County.

Undermined our legal marijuana market by refusing to prosecute illegal marijuana traffickers after 500 pounds of black market marijuana was found in his county.

Legalized psychedelic drugs and prostitution by refusing to charge offenders.

Ended cash bail.

During the press conference, Tignanelli said POAM hears from officers in Washtenaw County “all the time” about how Savit’s policies makes their job enforcing the law difficult.

POAM joins the Michigan Fraternal Order of Police, more than 60 county prosecutors, over 30 sheriffs in supporting Doug Lloyd, and they stressed today the importance of ensuring he wins in November.
