The Kolkata doctor rape and murder case has shocked the nation, drawing widespread outrage and demands for justice. The victim, a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, was brutally assaulted and murdered on the night of August 9, 2024. The autopsy report revealed horrifying details, indicating that the doctor had been strangled, and sustained numerous injuries, including genital mutilation, broken bones, and other severe wounds. The brutality of the crime has evoked memories of the infamous Nirbhaya case.
A civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy, who was employed at the hospital, was arrested in connection with the crime. However, questions have been raised about whether he acted alone, as the extent of the injuries suggests the possibility of multiple perpetrators. Allegations have also surfaced regarding attempts to cover up the crime, with suspicions of involvement from others within the hospital.
The case has seen significant developments, including the resignation of the hospital’s principal and other administrative staff. Due to the lack of progress in the investigation and serious lapses by the authorities, the Calcutta High Court has ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the probe.
